Malacañang on Tuesday rejected claims that former Ako Bicol Party-list Representative Zaldy Co faces physical danger upon his return to the Philippines, calling the narrative speculative and lacking factual basis.
Communications Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said those raising concerns have not presented concrete evidence.
“Wala namang basehan kung hindi mapapatunayan na may death threats,” Castro stated, describing the claims as attempts to delay Co’s repatriation.
Despite questioning the allegations, the Palace emphasized its commitment to uphold the rule of law and ensure protection for individuals under Philippine jurisdiction.
“The government will always assure the safety and the needed protection to be given to Zaldy Co,” Castro added.
Case Background
- Co, former chair of the House Committee on Appropriations, is currently in custody in the Czech Republic after being flagged for illegal entry.
- Philippine officials have activated diplomatic channels to facilitate his return.
- He is set to face trial over alleged involvement in a fraudulent flood control project in Oriental Mindoro.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has reportedly ordered a coordinated effort between Philippine and Czech authorities to secure Co’s prompt transfer back to the country.
