PBBM STRENGTHENS THAI ALLIANCE AHEAD OF 2026 ASEAN CHAIRMANSHIP

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has initiated an early diplomatic push within the ASEAN bloc, reaching out to Thailand’s newly appointed Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to solidify regional ties and coordinate on pressing economic and security challenges.

During a phone call on Tuesday, President Marcos congratulated the Thai leader, interpreting his appointment as a clear “mandate from the Thai people.”

The conversation served as a strategic opening to deepen the long-standing bilateral relationship between Manila and Bangkok.

A Strategic Partnership

With the Philippines preparing to assume the ASEAN chairmanship in 2026, the President is moving to secure key alliances. The discussions focused on a shared roadmap for stability, specifically targeting sectors that have been destabilized by recent global shifts.

Marcos highlighted several pillars for expanded cooperation:

  • Energy Security: Stabilizing access to power amid volatile global oil markets.
  • Food Security: Leveraging Thailand’s agricultural strengths to bolster regional supply chains.
  • Transnational Crime: Increasing intelligence sharing to combat cross-border illegal activities.

Regional Leadership and Cohesion

As the Southeast Asian region grapples with supply chain disruptions and escalating geopolitical tensions, the President emphasized the necessity of a united front.

Marcos signaled that his administration intends to play a proactive role in ensuring the bloc remains a stabilized zone for development.

In a statement reflecting his vision for the upcoming 2026 summit, Marcos underscored the importance of keeping ASEAN:

”a force for peace, growth, and opportunity”

The outreach to Thailand—a major driver of intra-regional trade—is seen by analysts as a foundational step in Marcos’s broader strategy to maintain regional cohesion.

By aligning with key economies early, the Philippines aims to navigate the “overlapping pressures” of the current global climate while fostering a resilient economic environment for the decade ahead.
