PH GOV’T CONFIDENT IN ZALDY CO’S REPATRIATION

Malacañang expressed strong confidence on Thursday regarding the eventual return of former Ako Bicol Party-list Representative Zaldy Co to the Philippines, noting that while the resolve is firm, the timeline remains subject to diplomatic negotiations with the Czech Republic.

During a Palace briefing on April 23, Communications Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro emphasized the government’s commitment to securing Co’s return to face legal proceedings.

“Kung Pilipinas lamang po ang pag-uusapan natin, definitely confident po tayo,” Castro stated.

Diplomatic Coordination Underway

The former lawmaker was recently apprehended in the Czech Republic after being flagged at the German border. Because the arrest occurred on foreign soil, the Philippine government must navigate international legal protocols to facilitate his transfer.

“Since mayroon pong ibang bansa na involve dito, so let us just hope na maibalik agad si Zaldy Co dito sa ating bansa,” Castro added.

She further clarified that the specific course of action is currently tethered to the bilateral agreements being forged between Manila and Prague:

“Pero sa ngayon po ay nakakuha ako ng kanilang update at sa ngayon po ay depende po—ang magiging aksiyon ng ating bansa, depende po sa anumang mapagkakasunduan with Czech Republic at kung ano ang magiging paraan sa pagpapabalik kay Zaldy Co.”

Legal Missions and Safety Assurances

In a significant move to expedite the process, Acting Justice Secretary Fredderick Vida was scheduled to depart for the Czech Republic this Thursday. His mission is to explore and finalize the legal avenues necessary for Co’s repatriation.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. previously assured the public that the administration is exhausting all legal means to bring the former representative home.

Furthermore, the Palace has guaranteed Co’s safety once he is back in domestic custody.

Background of Charges

Zaldy Co is a central figure in a high-profile investigation involving alleged anomalies in Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) flood control projects in Region IV-B.

He, along with several others, faces charges of graft and malversation currently pending before the Sandiganbayan.
