ALEX EALA FALLS TO MERTENS IN MADRID OPEN

The Madrid Open journey of Filipina tennis star Alex Eala reached its conclusion on Court 5, as she fell to world No. 21 Elise Mertens in a dominant display by the Belgian veteran.

Mertens secured her place in the next round with a decisive 6-2, 6-1 victory, repeating her success from the pair’s previous encounter.

The match began with a flash of brilliance from Eala, who surged to a 40-15 lead in the very first game. However, Mertens quickly neutralized the threat, leveraging her baseline consistency to win a series of grueling rallies.

After securing an early break and holding serve with a love game, the Belgian established a 2-0 cushion that set the tone for the afternoon.

Refusing to be intimidated, Eala narrowed the gap to 2-1 by dialing up her aggression and finding the lines with several bold winners. Nevertheless, Mertens’ seasoned expertise on the clay surface soon became the deciding factor.

Her superior court coverage and tactical placement allowed her to pull away to 4-2, before another break of serve extended her lead to 5-2.

Despite Eala showing resilience—including a pair of powerful first serves at a critical 30-30 juncture—Mertens remained unfazed. The Belgian closed out the first set in just 32 minutes, despite the Filipina teenager fighting until the final ball.

The momentum stayed firmly with Mertens in the second set. A wide forehand from Eala handed the Belgian an early break, allowing her to sprint to a 3-0 lead.

Throughout the set, Eala remained composed, frequently consulting with her coach during changeovers to find a tactical breakthrough. She managed to hold serve to make it 4-1, but she could not break the rhythm of the steady Belgian.

Mertens eventually sealed the match with a 6-1 second set, bringing an end to the contest. This victory marks the second time the world No. 21 has bested Eala on the WTA Pro Tour, following their first meeting at the 2023 Monastir Round of 32 in Tunisia.

While the loss marks the end of her run in Madrid, Eala’s competitive start against a top-tier opponent continues to highlight her growth on the professional circuit.
