The long-standing rivalry between the Philippines’ top television networks is expanding beyond traditional airwaves and into the digital frontier. In a historic move for local broadcasting, flagship primetime series from GMA Network, ABS-CBN Studios, and TV5 are set to stream simultaneously on Netflix starting Monday, May 11.
This “triple-threat” streaming launch marks a significant shift in how Philippine content is distributed, offering “global Kapatids, Kapamilyas, and Kapusos” a front-row seat to the country’s most competitive time slot.
GMA Network: “The Master Cutter”
Leading the charge for the Kapuso network is the action-drama “The Master Cutter,” directed by Dominic Zapata. The series stars Primetime King Dingdong Dantes as a legendary tailor in Baclaran who harbors a dangerous past as a high-level scout ranger and tracker.
- The Plot: Dantes’ character, known for his masterful disguises, finds his quiet life upended when he takes in a street-smart orphan (played by Sienna Stevens). The stakes turn personal when his next mission as a tracker requires him to hunt down the very girl he has sworn to protect.
- The Cast: Joining Dantes are Max Collins, Shuvee Etrata, Jo Berry, and Sienna Stevens.
ABS-CBN Studios: “Blood vs. Duty”
Representing the Kapamilya camp is the high-octane crime thriller “Blood vs. Duty,” produced by JRB Creative Production. The series centers on the collision between law enforcement and powerful regional syndicates.
- The Plot: Action star Richard Gutierrez plays Agent Marcus Reyes, a dedicated operative tracking an illegal firearms ring. His path crosses with Bela Padilla, an investigative agent with a tragic past, and Gerald Anderson, who portrays Jalil Abubakar—a man torn between his family’s loyalty and the law. The series is noted for its “fast-paced” narrative and a poster that subtly integrates the Philippine flag, symbolizing the “three stars” at the heart of a national conflict.
- The Cast: Top-billed by Richard Gutierrez, Bela Padilla, and Gerald Anderson, with Barbie Imperial and veteran actor Jaime Fabregas.
TV5 & Slingshot Studios: “A Secret in Prague”
The Kapatid Network enters the fray with “A Secret in Prague,” a romantic action-mystery shot against the picturesque backdrop of the Czech Republic.
- The Plot: This series marks the first screen pairing of Enrique Gil (Mikoy) and Andrea Brillantes (Chiara). The story begins with a whirlwind romance in Prague that quickly unravels into a web of international intrigue. Mikoy finds himself caught between his love for Chiara and a covert operation led by special agents to take down her father, a notorious figure in the criminal underworld.
- The Cast: Starring Enrique Gil and Andrea Brillantes, with Kim Domingo and Cedrick Juan playing pivotal roles as undercover agents.
While these programs continue to battle for ratings on free-to-air television at 8:00 PM, their arrival on Netflix ensures that local storytelling reaches an international audience, proving that the “Big Three” are ready to showcase the “lakas at bangis” (strength and ferocity) of Filipino talent on the world stage.
