The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) voiced its full support on Friday for the arrest of former broadcaster Jay Sonza, hailing the move as a victory for accountability and truth in digital spaces.
The PCO issued an official statement praising the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) for its decisive action in filing charges and executing an arrest warrant against Sonza.
The legal action stems from social media posts that allegedly contained fabricated details concerning the health of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Acting Communications Secretary Dave Gomez stated that the NBI’s intervention is a clear indicator of the administration’s commitment to protecting Filipinos from online deception.
“It shows the government’s continuing effort to guard the truth, protect the public from deception, and preserve a free but responsible democratic space.”
A WARNING AGAINST MISINFORMATION
Gomez further noted that the proceedings against the former broadcaster should serve as a stern reminder to those who use social media to spread lies. He emphasized that the government will not hesitate to use the full force of the law against those who compromise public trust.
“Misinformation undermines public trust, endangers lives, and will be met with swift, lawful consequences.”
While the PCO reaffirmed its stance on maintaining an open democratic environment, Gomez stressed that freedom of speech is not a license to propagate falsehoods. He urged the public to maintain order and accuracy in their online interactions.
“Public discourse must remain free, but it must also be truthful, fair, and orderly. Speak freely, but not falsely.”
THE ARREST AND CHARGES
Sonza was apprehended by NBI agents on Thursday night in Quezon City. The operation was based on a warrant issued by the Pasay City Regional Trial Court.
The former broadcaster is facing charges related to the unlawful use of means of publication and unlawful utterances under the Revised Penal Code, elevated by the provisions of the Cybercrime Prevention Act.
