ESCUDERO URGES CAUTION AMID MAYON ASHFALL AND PYROCLASTIC FLOWS

Senator Chiz Escudero on Monday called for strict adherence to safety protocols as Mayon Volcano continues its heightened activity, generating ashfall and dangerous volcanic flows across several areas in Albay.

The lawmaker emphasized that he is maintaining constant communication with local leaders to ensure that local government units (LGUs) receive the necessary support to manage the displacement and health risks caused by the volcano’s unrest.

“Nakikiisa ako sa ating mga kababayan sa Albay sa gitna ng patuloy na aktibidad ng Bulkang Mayon. Hinihikayat ko ang lahat na sundin ang mga abiso ng mga awtoridad at unahin ang kanilang kaligtasan. Patuloy kong mino-monitor ang sitwasyon at handa akong tumulong anumang oras kung kinakailangan,” Escudero said.

VOLCANIC ACTIVITY REPORT

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), Alert Level 3 remains in effect. The agency monitored pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) traveling down the Mi-isi Gully on the volcano’s southern and southwestern slopes.

The recent escalation was traced to a lava collapse late Saturday, followed by minor Strombolian eruptions. These events produced significant rockfalls and ash plumes that have drifted toward populated centers.

Affected Areas:

  • Legazpi City
  • Camalig
  • Guinobatan
  • Daraga

SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS

Local authorities and health officials have advised residents in the path of the ashfall to take immediate precautions:

  • Respiratory Protection: Wear face masks (N95 preferred) or use damp cloths to prevent inhaling fine volcanic ash.
  • Indoor Shelter: Stay inside with all doors and windows securely closed.
  • Hazard Zones: Strictly avoid river channels and gullies, as these are primary paths for PDCs and potential lahar flows if rain occurs.

Phivolcs continues to warn that the high level of magmatic unrest could lead to further explosive activity, maintaining the strict prohibition on entry into the six-kilometer permanent danger zone.
