CHED: REFRAMED COLLEGE CURRICULUM STILL UNDER REVIEW AND NOT FINAL

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) clarified on Thursday, May 7, that the proposed Reframed General Education (GE) Curriculum for tertiary education is still undergoing rigorous evaluation and has not yet been finalized.

This statement follows a public hearing held on May 5, where various stakeholders voiced their concerns regarding the potential overhaul of college requirements.

CHED emphasized that the review process is inclusive, involving continuous consultations with students, faculty, professional organizations, and higher education institutions.

The Commission assured the public that the transition is being handled with care to ensure the resulting policy is both globally competitive and nationally relevant.

“All stakeholder inputs will be carefully examined as part of the ongoing review to ensure the curriculum is coherent, responsive, and aligned with national priorities and global standards,” the Commission stated.

The review is being led by the Technical Panel for General Education (TPGE), which was reconstituted in September 2024 to address curricular alignment gaps between Senior High School and college.

CHED maintained that its decision-making remains “deliberate and evidence-based,” with all formal position papers being scrutinized by the TPGE before recommendations reach the Commission en banc.

The proposed changes, which first surfaced in a draft memorandum dated April 16, 2026, suggest a significant reduction of GE units from 36 down to 18. Additionally, it proposes a 36-unit cap for autonomous universities.

These specific adjustments have sparked debate within the academe, particularly regarding the future of humanities and social science courses and the job security of affected faculty members.

CHED noted that more consultation sessions are scheduled for the coming weeks to ensure the final policy balances the interests of the labor market with the holistic development of Filipino learners.
