ATENEO VOWS SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS, STAFF NAMED IN HAZING PROBE

Ateneo de Manila University has promised to stand by its student managers and utility staff after they were named in a police recommendation for criminal charges tied to the tragic deaths of student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.

The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) included student managers Paolo Adevoso and Andrew Salud, alongside utility personnel Aris Prince and Joel Rapa, in its list of recommended respondents.

The four individuals, together with Blue Eagles head coach Tab Baldwin and other coaching staff members, face potential complaints for allegedly violating Republic Act No. 11053, or the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018.

Following the CIDG’s announcement, Ateneo confirmed it had contacted the affected individuals and their households to extend guidance.

”Recognizing the unique circumstances and needs of those affected, the University has reached out to them and their families to offer appropriate support and accompaniment throughout the legal process, while respecting that each respondent’s rights and interests must be represented independently,” the university said.

The institution emphasized its commitment to protecting its community members as they navigate the developing legal situation.

”Our foremost concern is the welfare of our students and staff, and the assurance that each of them receives the support, fairness, and due process they deserve,” it added.

Ateneo clarified that while it will provide necessary backing, it recognizes that each person requires independent legal counsel to guarantee a fair process. Prior to this, the university noted that it acknowledged the CIDG’s findings and respected the investigation conducted by the authorities.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has since confirmed that the CIDG’s official complaint referral has been forwarded to its office for evaluation and subsequent legal action.
