Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala’s impressive campaign at Wimbledon came to a close on Monday in London following a grueling three-set defeat against Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in the fourth round.
Paolini, seeded 13th, bounced back from a second-set lapse to clinch a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory. The win propels the world No. 17 into the quarter-finals, halting the 21-year-old Eala’s bid to become the first Filipino player to reach a Grand Slam singles final eight since Felicisimo Ampon accomplished the feat at the 1953 French Open.
The seasoned Italian, who finished as the runner-up at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships after losing to Barbora Krejčíková, managed to avenge her previous encounter with Eala.
The young Filipina had comfortably beaten Paolini in straight sets earlier this year during the Dubai Tennis Championships in February.
Despite the loss, Eala’s London stint was highlighted by a historic, monumental upset on Saturday, where she stunned defending champion Iga Świątek in the third round. In that encounter, Eala showcased incredible resilience by enduring a marathon 84-minute first set before wrapping up the match, 7-6 (11/9), 6-2.
The spectacular victory marked Eala’s second career win over the Polish superstar, following her breakout triumph at the Miami Open in March 2025.
Although her deep run was cut just short of the quarter-finals, her stellar performance further solidifies her reputation as a formidable rising star on the global tennis stage.
