BERNOS URGES LGUS TO EXPAND YOUTH PROGRAMS BEYOND SCREENS

Abra Lone District Representative JB Bernos is encouraging local government units (LGUs) to invest more in sports, arts, and community-based programs to help address growing concerns over the effects of excessive screen time and video gaming among young Filipinos.

According to Bernos, providing more opportunities for meaningful social interaction can help young people develop stronger values and remain connected to their communities.

“As we continue to lament that our children are getting more disconnected from reality because of technology, I believe that now more than ever we should double down on activities that help establish real human connection.”

The lawmaker said organized extracurricular activities have long been effective in keeping the youth engaged in positive pursuits while steering them away from harmful influences.

“Sports, arts, theater, and other collective activities are tried and tested solutions that benefit our youth. Sa tulong ng mga ito ay mailalayo natin sila sa karahasan, sa droga, masamang bisyo, at iba pa.”

Bernos stressed that LGUs have an important role in creating programs that strengthen communities and support families in guiding the younger generation.

He also called for closer collaboration among local governments, schools, religious groups, and non-government organizations to provide more opportunities for youth participation.

“We have various partners that we can rely on in this regard, such as the church, non-government organizations, and schools. Lumikha tayo ng plataporma para maengganyo natin ang kabataan na may mas malaking mundo sa labas ng cellphone at computer.”

In addition to recreational activities, Bernos suggested that LGUs organize environmental cleanups, tree-planting activities, museum visits, and nature trips to encourage civic responsibility and broaden young people’s understanding of the world.

He said these experiences can inspire the youth to recognize that they can make meaningful contributions to their communities and to society.
