HBO Max surged ahead in the television landscape on Wednesday as the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations were announced, with the platform pulling in a leading 122 nods, closely followed by Netflix’s 111.

The network’s medical drama The Pitt spearheaded the charge, collecting a massive 25 nominations, while the swan song of the critically adored comedy Hacks rewrote records by yielding 24 nods—the highest single-year total ever achieved by a comedy.

Looking to maintain its reign as Best Drama, The Pitt dominated the acting tiers with 13 individual nods. Over on the comedy side, Hacks will battle for the top category prize. The series boasts a potential historic sweep for lead actress Jean Smart, who is seeking her fifth consecutive trophy for playing iconic comic Deborah Vance. Fellow cast members Hannah Einbinder and Meg Stalter scooped up supporting actress acknowledgments, while co-creator Paul W. Downs earned a nod for supporting actor.

Reflecting on the monumental recognition for the show’s final stretch, Einbinder shared her immense appreciation for the milestone:

”What can I say? Being recognized by my peers in this way is the cherry on top of the most creatively fulfilling experience of my life.”

The statues will be handed out on September 14 during a live, star-studded broadcast on NBC and streaming platforms via Peacock.
