PALACE DENIES SERVICE EXTENSION FOR CALABARZON POLICE CHIEF MARANTAN

Malacañang has turned down a request to prolong the active service of Calabarzon regional police director Brig. Gen. Hansel Marantan, affirming that he will step down this week upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 56.

The Palace stuck to the standard retirement timeline despite an official push from Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla, who had urged the National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) to grant the general a one-year extension.

“Walang extension para kay General Marantan. At maaari po siyang makatulong sa ibang pamamaraan,” Communications Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro stated during a press briefing on Thursday.

Marantan, whose career includes a period of detention over his involvement in the controversial 2013 Atimonan, Quezon shootout, is scheduled to officially conclude his police service on July 10.

In his appeal to NAPOLCOM, Remulla had emphasized that extending Marantan’s term was vital “in the interest of the service to ensure continuity in the execution of critical and ongoing high-impact operations.”

However, the executive branch ultimately denied the request, finalizing the regional chief’s retirement for the end of the week.
