CBCP MONITORS VP SARA’S IMPEACHMENT TRIAL

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said it is closely following the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte, stressing that the process should be carried out in accordance with the provisions of the 1987 Constitution.

Speaking after the CBCP’s plenary assembly in Sinacaban, Misamis Occidental, Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo underscored the importance of the impeachment trial as a constitutionally mandated process.

“We are closely monitoring the impeachment trial. Our position remains unchanged: this impeachment trial is important.”

Bagaforo called on authorities to allow the legal proceedings to continue without outside influence and to respect the country’s judicial institutions.

“Let the impeachment process take its course. Let the rule of law render its own verdict.”

The bishop also clarified that the CBCP’s position should not be interpreted as a political attack against the Vice President, emphasizing that the Church’s concern lies in safeguarding democratic institutions and the rule of law.

“This is not a condemnation of the Vice President… What we are upholding is the Constitution and the rule of law.”

According to Bagaforo, the Church remains committed to promoting justice, accountability, and transparency in public service.

“The Church advocates for nothing other than justice. This also serves as a reminder to public officials to be accountable.”

The Senate impeachment court formally opened proceedings this week. Duterte is facing four articles of impeachment involving allegations of bribery, unexplained wealth, misuse of confidential funds, and grave threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
