President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has formally recognized outgoing South Korean Ambassador Lee Sang-hwa for his pivotal role in elevating the diplomatic ties between the Philippines and South Korea to a Strategic Partnership.
During a farewell courtesy call at Malacañang on July 9, President Marcos conferred the Order of Sikatuna, Rank of Grand Cross (Datu), Gold Distinction, upon the diplomat.
The prestigious accolade is bestowed on foreign envoys who have demonstrated outstanding service in strengthening international relations with the country.
According to the Presidential Communications Office, Ambassador Lee’s leadership coincided with a milestone period for bilateral cooperation, highlighted by the official upgrade of their partnership during South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s state visit to Manila in October 2024.
Taking to social media, President Marcos expressed his gratitude for the envoy’s dedication to reinforcing the alliance.
”Our partnership with the Republic of Korea continues to grow stronger because of friends who have helped deepen the ties between our two nations,” the President said.
”Thank you, Ambassador Lee Sang-hwa, for your service and friendship. I wish you all the best in your future endeavors,” he added.
The Strategic Partnership forged during Lee’s assignment broadens cooperation between the two democracies in essential areas such as maritime security, military modernization, green energy, digital technology, trade, and climate initiatives.
The relationship dates back to the Korean War, when the Philippines became the first Asian nation to send combat forces to defend South Korea.
Decades later, this historic alliance remains robust through substantial trade investments, cultural integration, and a shared vision for stability and economic growth in the Indo-Pacific region.
