Former U.S. President Joe Biden shared on Wednesday that he is writing a memoir about his presidency, while also offering an encouraging update on his ongoing cancer treatment.
The 83-year-old revealed in May 2025 that he was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer that had metastasized to his bones, and he has since been undergoing radiation therapy.
“Since I left the presidency, I’ve had a lot of people ask me, ‘Joe, what have you been doing?’” the 83-year-old said in a video posted to his social media account.
“I’ve been spending a lot of time with my family. I’m dealing with a cancer diagnosis, and I’ve been getting treatment, and it’s been going really well,” he added, thanking supporters for their well wishes.
His forthcoming book, titled Promise Me, America, is set to detail “the challenges we faced as a nation, about the decisions I made, and why I made them.”
According to Biden, the memoir will address pivotal moments of his administration, such as the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot, the conflict in Ukraine, and the military exit from Afghanistan.
It will also explain “why I chose to run for reelection, and why I chose to step aside,” Biden noted.
At age 81, Biden initially campaigned for a second term in 2024 despite public worry over his health. However, he exited the race following intense Democratic pressure and a poorly received debate against Donald Trump. His successor on the ticket, then-Vice President Kamala Harris, ultimately lost the election to Trump.
Trump, who reached age 80 in June, is set to break Biden’s record as the oldest sitting U.S. president by the end of his term in January 2029.
Biden’s memoir is slated for publication on November 17, 2026, shortly after the midterm elections. It follows the release of Harris’s own book last year, 107 Days, which detailed her rapid presidential campaign following Biden’s departure from the ticket.
