SENATE PLANS REVISED SCHEDULE FOR HEARINGS DURING VP SARA’S IMPEACHMENT TRIAL

Senate President Win Gatchalian stated on Thursday that lawmakers are drafting an adjusted calendar for committee and budget proceedings to ensure legislative work moves forward seamlessly alongside the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

Gatchalian noted that senators have reached an initial consensus to hold committee panels and budget discussions on Thursdays and Fridays, keeping routine chamber business on track.

“Kausap ko ‘yung mga senators, so we’re planning for committee hearings and budget hearings Thursdays and Fridays,” Gatchalian told reporters in an ambush interview.

Starting July 29, the Senate sitting as an impeachment court will convene from Monday through Wednesday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., with standard plenary sessions following immediately at 4 p.m.

The Senate leader conceded that managing lawmaking responsibilities while running an impeachment trial presents a tough juggling act.

“It’s going to be a challenge, honestly,” Gatchalian added.

To handle the packed agenda and concurrent hearings, Gatchalian indicated the Senate is considering renting extra session rooms at the nearby Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City.

Furthermore, he is working closely with Senate Deputy Majority Leader JV Ejercito, who heads the Finance Committee, to ensure upcoming national budget deliberations stay on schedule despite the ongoing trial.
