Anime and cosplay enthusiasts across the country are gearing up for one of Metro Manila’s largest Japanese-themed pop culture celebrations, as the Otaku Expo Tanabata Festival 2026 is set to take over Megatrade Halls 1 to 3 at SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City on August 8 and 9, 2026.
Bringing the Japanese Star Festival to Metro Manila
Organized by Ozine Events, the two-day convention brings the romantic spirit of Tanabata Japan’s traditional Star Festival based on the folklore of Orihime and Hikoboshi to life. Attendees can expect an authentic summer matsuri atmosphere filled with traditional festival activities alongside modern anime attractions.
Among the featured festival highlights is the traditional Tanzaku Wish Tree, where visitors can write their personal wishes on colorful paper strips and tie them to bamboo branches. Attendees can also test their agility at traditional Kingyo-sukui (goldfish scooping) booths and participate in various carnival-style skill games offering exclusive anime merchandise and collectibles. On-site tickets start at ₱299 per day, with special VIP options available for fans seeking early entry and priority access to key attractions.
High-Energy Stage Contests and Guest Lineup
The festival main stage will host a continuous lineup of high-stakes competitions and live performances across both days. Music lovers can catch local talent during the Battle of the Bands anime cover showdown and the Otaku Singing Contest, while fashion enthusiasts can look forward to the signature Kimono Cosplay Competition. Pet lovers will also get a dedicated showcase as community members dress their furry companions in custom anime-inspired outfits for the fan-favorite Cat & Dog Cosplay segment.
The event will also host meet-and-greets, panel discussions, and photo sessions with prominent international and local guest creators. International cosplayers headline the lineup, featuring Knite from Australia, alongside Chaeeun and Moiichan from Thailand. Local pop culture figures will also take the stage, including Philippine cosplay favorites Roxanne Kho and Zackt, Jane Yu, Pomponmy, and Eri.
