The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) recorded an 89% surge in its solar financing portfolio in 2025, driven by a growing push among Filipino homeowners to combat rising electricity rates with rooftop solar installations.
The notable growth follows the 2024 launch of the bank’s Solar Mortgage program under the BPI Green Solutions initiative. The program allows customers to fund solar equipment through property-backed financing or bundle installation costs directly into their existing housing loan under one account.
“We are seeing a significant surge in consumer interest toward solar energy, directly reflected in the rising demand for specialized green financing solutions,” said Dex Cuajotor, Head of Retail Lending and Bancassurance at BPI.
“This market shift validates our commitment to empowering Filipino households with accessible financial options as they transition toward more sustainable and cost-effective energy alternatives.”
BPI noted that its portfolio expansion aligns with national trends. Citing Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) figures, the lender highlighted that over 22,000 grid-connected customers across the Philippines have joined the government’s net metering program.
To further lower the barrier to entry, BPI provides zero cash-out terms for eligible borrowers, introductory housing loan fixed rates starting at 5.99% for the first year, free property appraisals, and waived bank fees up to ₱50,000.
The initiative comes as President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. pushes for broader adoption of residential solar energy through the proposed Sariling Kuryente Act, which seeks to cut setup and operational expenses for home solar setups.
