The Philippine National Police (PNP) is set to intensify patrols and community-focused operations in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs) following the enactment of the Last Mile and GIDA Schools Act, according to PNP Chief PGen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr.
Nartatez instructed all police units to elevate their presence around public schools in underserved communities to ensure a secure setting for both students and educators.
“Access to education must be matched by access to safety. The PNP will continue working with the Department of Education, local government units and community stakeholders to protect schools, secure education personnel and promptly address security concerns in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas,” Nartatez said.
Signed into law by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on July 22, the legislation institutionalizes state support for public schools in remote regions.
It mandates that the Department of Education (DepEd) execute a comprehensive program addressing infrastructure, instructional materials, educator support, nutrition, sanitation, power, technology integration, and alternative learning systems.
Additionally, the act establishes a national accessibility standard to ensure basic education facilities are within walking distance whenever feasible.
PNP leadership emphasized that these heightened security protocols aim to foster a safe, stable, and conducive environment for learning.
“Education should never be limited by distance or security concerns. The PNP will continue to do its part to keep schools and communities safe so that teachers can fulfill their mission and students can focus on learning with confidence,” Nartatez added.
The PNP reaffirmed its commitment to maintain close coordination with DepEd, local government units, and community leaders to uphold peace and order as the new law takes effect.
