Tropical cyclone wind signals have been raised over several areas in Luzon on Wednesday, August 5, following the intensification of Maymay into a tropical storm.
According to the 5 a.m. bulletin from state weather bureau PAGASA, the storm’s center was tracked 170 kilometers west-northwest of Bacnotan, La Union, packing maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h near the center and gusts reaching 80 km/h as it moved slowly eastward.
PAGASA forecasts Maymay to make landfall over Ilocos Sur or La Union by Wednesday afternoon or evening, after which it will traverse the landmass of Northern and Central Luzon through Thursday, August 6.
While maintaining tropical storm intensity prior to landfall, Maymay is expected to weaken into a tropical depression by Thursday morning during its passage across Luzon, and may degrade further into a low-pressure area by Thursday afternoon or evening.
The weather bureau cautioned that heavy rains and damaging winds could still affect regions outside the immediate landfall zone and forecast confidence cone, noting that track adjustments remain possible within the forecast window.
