President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has signed Republic Act No. 12322, granting the Department of Education (DepEd) full authority to select the most effective teaching strategies and ending the mandatory use of the spiral progression approach in basic education.
Signed on August 2, the new legislation amends Section 5 of the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013, giving the agency greater flexibility to adopt evidence-based and context-sensitive methods tailored to various subjects, student needs, and learning environments while maintaining core K to 12 standards.
“The curriculum shall employ the approach deemed most effective by the DepEd to ensure mastery of knowledge and skills after each level,” the new law stated.
Under RA 12322, DepEd is also mandated to perform a systematic review of the basic education curriculum and its teaching methods at least once every five years. The law takes effect 15 days following its official publication.
