Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. ordered nationwide police units to intensify operations against illegal firearms while tightening regulations on responsible gun ownership following multiple shooting incidents involving minors.
Nartatez instructed the Firearms and Explosives Office (FEO) to strictly monitor compliance with firearm regulations, highlighting the necessity of proper and safe storage for licensed guns.
“This will come with aggressive operations against loose and illegal firearms in their respective areas,” said Nartatez.
The directive follows a appeal from the Department of Education (DepEd) urging law enforcement to step up gun control measures.
Education Secretary Sonny Angara highlighted recent tragic events, including an August 3 accidental shooting in General Santos City where a nine-year-old was injured by a .38 caliber pistol handled by a 13-year-old, and a fatal shooting at a Tacloban City school on June 22.
Nartatez reaffirmed that the PNP is working closely with DepEd, local government units, and community stakeholders to keep firearms out of children’s reach.
“Owning a firearm is a privilege that comes with great responsibility. Every licensed firearm owner must ensure that firearms are securely stored and never accessible to children. One act of negligence can lead to irreversible consequences,” he said.
