A high school shooting northwest of Bangkok left at least six people dead and multiple others injured on Friday, police confirmed.
The violent incident occurred at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Nonthaburi province. Royal Thai Police spokesperson Trairong Piwpan reported that the suspect, a student at the institution, believed he used a family member’s firearm to execute the attack.
Witnesses described hiding inside classrooms upon hearing gunshots until law enforcement officers arrived to escort them to safety. Shortly after, emotional crowds gathered outside as emergency personnel secured the campus.
Initial accounts from officials presented conflicting details regarding the total casualty count and the shooter’s condition:
- Royal Thai Police: Spokesperson Trairong Piwpan stated that the victims included three teachers and three students. He noted that 15 people were injured—two critically—and that the shooter was hospitalized in serious condition.
- Ministry of Health: Health Minister Pattana Promphat reported 22 injuries, with nine in critical condition, noting that some injuries resulted from falls rather than direct gunfire.
- Ministry of Interior: Deputy Interior Minister Polapee Suwunchwee stated at the scene that five teachers died in the shooting. He added that the suspect killed his two grandparents at home prior to the school attack and later died in hospital care.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul expressed his condolences and instructed authorities to support the victims and their families. The motive remains under investigation.
