Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson warned on Monday that public outrage will only escalate until the government enforces strict accountability and recovers funds misused in failed flood control initiatives.
Lacson noted that widespread inundation from recent heavy rainfall has reignited citizens’ anger over suspected corrupt practices in public works, with ordinary Filipinos bearing the brunt of recurring infrastructure failures.
In a social media statement, the senator highlighted the rising hostility from flood-stricken communities.
“After a heavy downpour leaves flooded streets and yards, people will not be short on words in cursing politicians, Department of Public Works and Highways officials and contractors,” Lacson stated.
“Unless, and this is probably, genuine retribution and restitution become the order of the day no matter who is involved,” he emphasized.
His comments follow severe flooding triggered by Tropical Cyclones Luis and Maymay alongside the enhanced southwest monsoon (habagat), which displaced thousands of families and prompted widespread class and work suspensions.
Lacson credited the Senate, Ombudsman Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla, journalists, and vigilant netizens for keeping public scrutiny focused on the issue.
“I don’t know how the government can even claim whatever accomplishments we have at the moment,” Lacson remarked regarding the unresolved crisis.
