The death toll from the combined effects of the enhanced southwest monsoon (habagat) and Tropical Cyclones “Luis” and “Maymay” has increased to 19 following six newly reported fatalities, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) reported on Tuesday, August 11.
The surge in casualties stems largely from a deadly landslide in Barangay Guisad Surong, Baguio City, where the discovery of five more bodies brought the local site’s death toll to nine. Additional landslide-related fatalities in Benguet include two cooks in La Trinidad and one individual in Atok.
In Rizal, a newly reported drowning in Binangonan adds to earlier storm-related deaths, including two landslide victims in Rodriguez and a delivery rider killed by a falling tree in Antipolo City.
Meanwhile, Batangas maintains three fatalities across Batangas City, Lipa City, and Sta. Teresita due to drowning, electrocution, and a landslide.
Injuries have climbed to 15, with Benguet bearing the brunt of the casualties—recording 12 injured across Baguio City, La Trinidad, Kapangan, and Atok. Other injuries occurred in Suyo, Ilocos Sur; Rodriguez, Rizal; and Naic, Cavite. Search and rescue operations continue for four missing persons in Baguio City, Atok, and Batangas.
Severe rainfall has impacted over 2.27 million individuals (646,676 families) across 10 regions spanning Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Nearly 95,000 residents are currently taking shelter in 919 active evacuation centers.
OCD spokesperson Junie Castillo highlighted the geographical spread of the storm’s impact, noting that Northern Luzon took the brunt of the severe weather.
“If we are talking about the areas, Region 1 is considered the hardest hit, particularly the provinces of La Union and Pangasinan,” Castillo said.
Castillo added that the Cordillera Administrative Region suffered the majority of recent casualties, while Central Luzon, Calabarzon, and Metro Manila experienced widespread disruption.
The severe weather has damaged 684 homes, destroyed critical infrastructure estimated at ₱1.456 billion, and caused ₱135.33 million in agricultural losses. The government has disbursed ₱73.52 million in relief assistance to affected communities so far.
