The southwest monsoon, locally termed “habagat,” will bring moderate to heavy rainfall across broad swathes of Luzon and parts of the Visayas through the next five days, state weather agency PAGASA reported on Sunday, August 16.
Weather specialist Aldczar Aurelio detailed that rainfall levels between 50 and 100 millimeters are expected from Sunday noon until Monday noon, August 17, across Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Benguet, and Zambales.
The downpours will spread further from Monday noon to Tuesday noon, August 18, reaching Bataan and Occidental Mindoro in addition to the initial five provinces.
Between Tuesday noon and Wednesday noon, August 19, rainy conditions will linger over those areas while expanding to include Tarlac, Pampanga, Cavite, Batangas, and Antique.
Aurelio urged communities to stay vigilant against potential environmental hazards stemming from the prolonged wet weather.
”Aurelio cautioned that the rains could trigger localized flooding, especially in urban and low-lying communities and areas close to rivers. He added that landslides remain possible in highly susceptible locations.”
Throughout the coming 24 hours, Metro Manila, the remainder of Luzon, and the Visayas will face partly cloudy to overcast skies accompanied by isolated thunderstorms or brief rain showers.
The rest of the nation can anticipate generally fair weather, though localized afternoon or evening thunderstorms remain possible.
In a separate update, PAGASA noted that a low-pressure area located 2,335 kilometers east-northeast of extreme Northern Luzon—well outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility—is projected to dissolve within hours without affecting the country.
