Disney and Pixar have unveiled an initial glimpse of Coco 2, sharing new concept artwork on August 15 that showcases a teenage Miguel alongside his trademark guitar and his loyal alebrije companion, Dante.
Slated for a November 2029 theatrical debut, the anticipated sequel features the return of Benjamin Bratt, who will once again voice the iconic musician Ernesto de la Cruz.
During Disney’s upcoming project showcase at D23, Bratt provided a playful preview of the next chapter in Miguel’s story:
“To some, Miguel is a little menace who ruined a career and destroyed a legacy,” he said. “Ernesto de la Cruz is back for revenge, sending Miguel on an adventure back to the land of the dead. Proving fate has a sense of humor, Miguel must team up with a handsome superstar: me.”
The second installment reunites key members of the original creative team, with Coco director Lee Unkrich returning to helm the project alongside Adrian Molina. Pixar veteran Mark Nielsen, whose previous credits include Toy Story 4 and Inside Out 2, serves as producer.
Debuting in 2017, the original film followed 12-year-old Miguel, a young boy whose deep love for music clashed with his family’s generational ban on the art. His life took a dramatic turn on Día de los Muertos after being transported to the Land of the Dead, where he began uncovering long-hidden truths about his ancestors.
The original movie earned over $800 million globally and secured two Academy Awards, winning Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Remember Me”.
