PLDT SURVIVES AKARI IN FOUR SETS TO FINISH PVL ON TOUR SWEEP

The PLDT High Speed Hitters capped off an undefeated two-game run in the PVL On Tour Showdown after subduing a resilient Akari Chargers team, 25-14, 26-24, 21-25, 25-10, at the Mindanao Civic Center Gymnasium in Tubod, Lanao del Norte.

Following their four-set victory against Choco Mucho in Vigan, PLDT demonstrated its adaptability across various match dynamics—whether building an early advantage, mounting a comeback, or remaining steady during grueling rallies.

The final set featured multiple stoppages and unforced errors, but PLDT maintained composure despite losing a “premium ball” opportunity and facing stiff resistance. Savi Davison made up for a previous misfire by delivering a fierce spike to bring the High Speed Hitters to match point at 24-20.

The Chargers were unable to construct a clean counterattack on the next play. Middle blocker Risa Sato, who provided timely points earlier, lost her grip on her final attempt, wrapping up the two-hour, 15-minute clash and sparking celebrations from local supporters.

A crucial challenge review also worked in PLDT’s favor late in the fourth. Sato appeared to bring Akari within two at 20-22 off an overpass, but a video review confirmed net contact, awarding the point to PLDT for a 23-19 lead instead.

Behind Davison’s scoring, PLDT out-killed Akari 54-46. However, net defense proved to be the decisive factor, as the High Speed Hitters registered nine blocks compared to just two from the Chargers.

PLDT conceded 29 errors but capitalized on 31 miscues by Akari, as both squads struggled with momentum throughout the contest.

Homegrown star Kath Arado anchored the defense with 19 digs to capture Best Player of the Game honors. Following the victory, she acknowledged her family in attendance, noting that they have served as her constant inspiration since the beginning of her career.

Davison paced all scorers with 22 points, while Kim Dy added nine. Mika Reyes, Alleiah Malaluan, Majoy Baron, and Jovie Prada added six points each.

Faith Nisperos led Akari with 12 points and Chenie Tagaod had eight, while Ivy Lacsina and Grethcel Soltones were limited to seven points each as the Chargers ended their preseason with a 1-2 record.

Although PLDT secured the victory in four sets, its stiffest test came in the second frame. Trailing 16-22 as their execution faltered, the High Speed Hitters faced the temptation to drop the set and reset for the third, given the exhibition nature of the tour.

Instead, the squad launched a 3-0 run to close the distance, fueled by two consecutive errors from Akari. The Chargers called a timeout to interrupt PLDT’s momentum and force setter Kim Fajardo out of position, but the High Speed Hitters held firm to take the set.
