KEAN CIPRIANO RESPONDS TO MRLD’S ROYALTY CLAIMS FOLLOWING O/C RECORDS EXIT

O/C Records co-founder Kean Cipriano addressed the statements made by singer-songwriter mrld after her departure from the label, particularly clarifying her claim that she received only 5% in music royalties.

During a Thursday television interview, Cipriano clarified that the 5% figure refers specifically to original sound recording (OSR) royalties rather than an artist’s total income, noting that musicians earn from various streams including live shows, publishing, and endorsement deals.

When questioned on whether live performance revenue was subjected to the same percentage, Cipriano dismissed the notion.

“No, definitely not.”

He explained that management typical collects a 20% to 30% booking fee, leaving the remaining 70% to 80% for the artist, adding that endorsement earnings driven by a talent’s popularity are similarly not divided on a 5-to-95 ratio.

The dispute came to light in March when mrld revealed her transition to becoming an independent artist upon the conclusion of her contract with O/C Records.

“I deserve more than 5% of the songs I wrote and produced. I deserve more for all the hard work I put on for my name.”

“I didn’t go independent because I’m selfish and want revenge. I went independent because my family needs to eat and live. ‘Di kami mabubuhay sa barya lang.”

The singer further claimed that her attempts to schedule a meeting with management were met with repeated absences.

Cipriano, who launched O/C Records alongside his wife, actress Chynna Ortaleza, expressed personal distress over the public allegations.

“It hurts because, at the end of the day, I’m also an artist.”

He stated that the label was established from their personal background as performers to grant creators creative control while building sustainable careers, adding that the narrative presented so far remains one-sided.

“If there’s a problem, if there are concerns, if there’s a negotiation or anything, come to the office and let’s talk.”
