Senator Risa Hontiveros has stated her willingness to serve as the opposition’s single presidential nominee for the upcoming May 2028 national elections.
Addressing questions regarding her electoral plans, the lawmaker noted,
“I am preparing very hard, working very hard … I’m strengthening myself as the strongest possible candidate.”
She indicated that she plans to coordinate with political allies once metrics demonstrate her viability, stressing that “Importante isa lang. Let’s unite around the strongest one so we have a fighting chance.”
The senator’s potential candidacy gained traction after a grassroots movement was inaugurated in Iloilo City, drawing over 1,500 supporters from across the Western Visayas region—where her lineage traces back to her grandfather, former Capiz Governor Jose Miraflores Hontiveros.
Expressing gratitude to her supporters in Western Visayas and the Ilonggo community for their early endorsement, Hontiveros remains featured in early voter preference surveys alongside other notable figures, including Vice President Sara Duterte, former Vice President and current Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo, and Senator Raffy Tulfo.
