Ombudsman Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla on Saturday, September 12, called for the Philippines to pursue extradition agreements with European countries amid reports that former Ako Bicol Party-list Representative Zaldy Co is staying in France.
Aside from Co, Senator Loren Legarda and her son, Batangas 1st District Representative Leandro Leviste, who are both facing plunder investigations before the Office of the Ombudsman, are also reportedly in France.
Remulla pointed out that the Philippines does not have an extradition treaty with France, which could complicate efforts to bring back individuals facing criminal cases in the country.
He said Co, who has been accused of involvement in the alleged flood control corruption, was reportedly able to purchase an apartment along Avenue Montaigne in France.
Remulla also questioned whether Legarda, who is currently on medical leave, intends to return to the Philippines.
Asked if the country should seek more bilateral agreements or extradition treaties with European nations, Remulla said:
“I think we should. At saka maraming Filipino doon,” Remulla said.
Remulla is set to visit France, where he will meet with international law enforcement organizations, including the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).
The Ombudsman said he plans to raise concerns that European countries could potentially become refuge for individuals wanted in connection with criminal cases in the Philippines.
