In a 13-5 voting tally with zero abstentions, the Senate cleared Senate Bill No. 2387 on its third and final reading to adjust tenure durations for local community leaders.
The proposed legislation extends the official mandate of local barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) representatives from four years to five years.
Under this measure, the local elections originally scheduled for the first Monday of November 2026 will be deferred to the first Monday of November 2028. Future poll cycles will take place every five years following that period.
Section 5 of the measure establishes that current local officers will be considered to have completed one full term as a result of their tenure being lengthened by two years.
Consequently, officials serving out their third straight term will be barred from running for another consecutive term during the November 2028 elections.
The most recent local village and youth council elections took place in 2023.
Opposing votes against the measure were registered by Senate President Pro Tempore Vicente “Tito” Sotto III, Senate Deputy Majority Leader Joel Villanueva, alongside Senators Risa Hontiveros, Bam Aquino, and Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan.
