Bicol Saro Party-list Representative Terry Ridon and lawyer Benjamin “Jay” Tolosa Jr. have been ordered by the Senate impeachment court to explain an alleged violation of the sub judice rule.
Both Ridon and Tolosa are members of the House prosecution panel in the impeachment proceedings, with Tolosa also serving as one of the panel’s spokespersons.
The sub judice rule generally restricts public discussion or disclosure of matters under judicial consideration when such statements could prejudice the proceedings, interfere with the administration of justice, or improperly influence the tribunal.
Speaking on Thursday, September 17, Ridon said he plans to submit his response to the show-cause order on Monday and present his explanation regarding the issue.
Ridon declined to discuss the specific circumstances behind the alleged violation but said he respects the authority of the impeachment court and will respond to the concerns raised in the order.
Despite the show-cause order, Ridon said the prosecution panel will proceed with its presentation of Article II of the impeachment complaint, which centers on allegations involving unexplained wealth.
He also said the prosecution intends to continue providing the public with information about developments in the impeachment proceedings.
Ridon maintained that explaining what happens during the hearings, while taking into account the substance and legal issues of the case, forms part of the prosecution panel’s responsibilities.
The lawmaker said the prosecution team would continue carrying out its duties while observing the rules and limitations imposed by the impeachment court.
