QUEZON CITY, Philippines — Manila 3rd District Representative Joel Chua sharply criticized former Cavite 4th District Representative Francisco “Kiko” Barzaga on Friday, September 25, following controversial online statements regarding the death of Batanes Lone District Representative Ciriaco “Jun” Gato Jr.
Barzaga sparked widespread backlash after framing the passing of Gato as “good news” and a political triumph linked to the ongoing impeachment developments involving Vice President Sara Duterte.
“Para sa isang nepo baby, bastos siya,” Chua said in a press conference.
The former Cavite lawmaker, a staunch ally of Vice President Duterte, accused the late legislator of supporting impeachment efforts and noted Gato’s involvement in his expulsion from the House of Representatives last June.
Barzaga further mocked the deceased representative while making unsubstantiated claims of corruption.
Gato, a physician who had served as Batanes representative since 2019 and chaired the House Committee on Health, died Monday at age 66 during his third and final term. He was among the 265 lawmakers who voted to expel Barzaga over repeated conduct unbecoming of a member, code of conduct violations, and disruptive behavior.
Prior to his removal, Barzaga had served two separate 60-day suspensions, including one in February for making disrespectful posts following the death of former Antipolo Representative Romeo Acop.
The House of Representatives held a necrological service for Gato on Friday morning, where colleagues honored his legislative contributions and career in public health.
