MANILA, Philippines — Senator Robin Padilla appeared before the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Friday, September 25, for the initial preliminary investigation into an obstruction of justice complaint accusing him of helping fellow lawmaker Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa evade law enforcement.
The approximately one-hour proceeding concluded with prosecutors directing the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) to submit supplementary documents referenced as annexes in the charge.
Following the hearing, Padilla declined to comment on the specific details of the case, though he indicated his intention to adhere to the legal process.
“Kung ano po ang sinasabe ng batas, ‘yan po ay susundin natin,” Padilla told reporters.
Prosecutors set the next hearing for October 9, while Padilla’s legal team was given until November to submit counter-affidavits. Supporters gathered outside the DOJ main office during the proceedings, where Senator Christopher “Bong” Go was seen waiting at the gates.
The complaint stems from allegations that Padilla assisted Dela Rosa in departing the Senate compound in May to avoid police officers who were attempting to serve an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
The ICC warrant addresses Dela Rosa’s involvement in the anti-illegal drug campaign during the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte, during which Dela Rosa served as chief of the Philippine National Police.
