MANILA, Philippines — The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has penalized the country’s main mobile operators—DITO Telecommunity, Globe Telecom, and Smart Communications—with a daily fine of ₱100,000 due to lingering mobile internet issues across the National Capital Region.
The regulatory body announced the show cause orders in a statement released Saturday, September 26, emphasizing that the financial penalties will continue until the network providers completely address their operational shortcomings.
“The NTC has prepared Show Cause Orders against the three mobile network operators imposing a daily penalty of ₱100,000.00 per day commencing today until the identified service deficiencies have been fully rectified,” the agency said.
Speed tests conducted by the agency throughout September revealed that signal quality and internet performance failed to show progress from earlier assessments carried out in the first two quarters of 2026.
“The September results confirmed that previously recorded poor mobile broadband signals remain substantially unchanged, despite the opportunity afforded mobile network operators to undertake urgent corrective measures,” the agency said.
Specific areas cited for failing the September revalidations include Makati and Quezon City for Globe; San Juan, Pasay, and Las Piñas for DITO; and Parañaque, Manila, and Pasig for Smart.
The NTC stated that monitoring operations will remain ongoing across additional locations in Metro Manila.
