TIPO-TIPO, Basilan — Multiple Philippine Army personnel sustained injuries following an attack by unidentified armed men in Tipo-Tipo, Basilan, on Monday morning, October 5.
According to the Army’s 11th Infantry Division (11ID), troops from the 45th Infantry Battalion were traveling along a road in Barangay Badja around 7:45 a.m. when they were ambushed.
“Some military personnel sustained injuries during the incident and were immediately evacuated to a medical facility for appropriate treatment,” 11ID Spokesperson Major Genesis Dizon said.
Military authorities have not released the specific number of wounded soldiers or details regarding their medical conditions. Investigators are currently working to determine the identity of the attackers and the motive behind the assault.
The ambush occurred in a town historically affected by conflict, where security forces have long conducted operations to maintain peace. Additional military units were dispatched following the attack.
“Reinforcements were promptly deployed to strengthen security in the area and prevent any further threat to our troops and nearby communities,” Dizon said.
The 11ID denounced the ambush and reiterated its commitment to track down the perpetrators.
“We assure the public that appropriate security measures are being undertaken in coordination with concerned units and authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and hold those responsible accountable,” Dizon stated.
“Our troops remain vigilant and committed to fulfilling their duty of protecting the people of Basilan and preserving the peace and security that communities and stakeholders have worked hard to achieve,” he added.
Military officials also cautioned the public against spreading unverified reports regarding the incident.
“We appeal to the public to remain calm and refrain from circulating unverified information that may cause unnecessary concern or hamper ongoing security efforts,” Dizon noted.
