PASAY CITY, Philippines — Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero on Monday reminded both legal counsel and non-lawyers involved in Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial to maintain mutual respect and keep their arguments centered on uncovering the truth.
Serving as the presiding officer of the impeachment court, Escudero appealed for composure amidst the heightened tensions surrounding the proceedings.
“Our duty is not to conquer one another in this proceedings but to eliminate the truth and serve the cause of justice. Let the arguments be forceful but never personal,” Escudero said.
Acknowledging the growing frustration and emotional charge accompanying the high-profile trial, the Senate chief urged those involved to uphold their duties professionally without giving in to hostility.
“Medyo maikli na ang pasensya ng karamihan; naguumapaw ang galit, poot, at inis. Subalit, hindi tayo puwedeng mawalan ng loob sa ating ginagampanang tungkulin. Hindi tayo puwedeng pumatol,” he stated.
Escudero further emphasized that the trial’s ultimate goal transcends individual interests or political feuds.
“It’s not about me. It’s not about you. It’s about the country,” he stressed.
