DOH WARNS ILOCOS REGION RESIDENTS AGAINST HEAT-RELATED ILLNESSES

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union — Regional health officials are advising the public across Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur, and Ilocos Norte to take proactive measures against heat-induced health complications as high temperatures persist throughout Northern Luzon.

The Department of Health–Ilocos Center for Health Development (DOH-Ilocos CHD) warned that unmitigated exposure to intense heat can trigger severe conditions, including extreme dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke, which can turn fatal if left untreated.

The public health warning comes as the region continues to experience the dry, sweltering conditions exacerbated by the El Niño climate pattern.

Health authorities noted that individuals exposed to high heat for extended periods face elevated health risks, with high-risk groups being particularly vulnerable to temperature spikes.

To lower the risk of heat stress, residents are advised to maintain constant hydration, limit direct exposure to sunlight, and wear light, loose-fitting attire. Officials also recommended postponing strenuous outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours.

Caregivers and parents are advised to monitor young children closely, while senior citizens, outdoor laborers, and individuals with preexisting health conditions should exercise heightened caution.

The DOH-Ilocos CHD reiterated the importance of recognizing the early symptoms of heat exhaustion and staying informed through official public health notices and meteorological updates, stressing that timely intervention remains crucial to preventing severe medical emergencies.
