PNP WARNS PUBLIC AGAINST SPREADING FAKE NEWS ON RUSSIA PLAGUE SUSPECT

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has appealed to the public to refrain from circulating unverified claims regarding a suspected pneumonic plague case in Russia, following growing online speculation about its potential impact on the country.

PNP Chief PGen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. cautioned that spreading baseless information risks igniting widespread panic and unwarranted public anxiety.

“While we understand the concerns and apprehensions on this matter, these do not justify any attempt to mislead the public. We in the PNP ask for responsible use of social media platforms especially on matters concerning public health,” said Nartatez.

The police chief’s warning follows online rumors tied to the recent death of a lab worker in Russia, which sparked social media posts drawing parallels to previous global health crises.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health (DOH) reassured citizens that it is actively keeping track of developments surrounding the Russian incident while maintaining readiness to deploy measures if necessary.

Public alarm escalated internationally after a female employee at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute of Siberia and the Far East passed away from an unidentified form of pneumonia. The fatality prompted local health authorities to place nearly 200 individuals under medical monitoring and enforce a hospital quarantine.

Law enforcement officials reminded social media users that individuals caught disseminating false reports face criminal liability under existing legislation.

“Freedom of speech and expression has limitations, especially if it threatens public welfare. We urge the public to be cautious and avoid sharing unverified information on social media,” Nartatez said.

He further advised citizens to verify news and depend solely on official updates issued by government agencies and credible institutions.
