MANILA — Vice President Sara Duterte has pledged to intensify the Philippines’ initiatives against illegal drug trafficking while expressing deep regret over the country’s recent association with the regional narcotics trade.
In an official statement released on October 11, Duterte extended her gratitude to the governments of Laos and Thailand for their aggressive crackdowns on illicit drugs and their commitment to bolstering regional security. She noted that their actions have provided vital protection to families.
“I extend my sincere appreciation to the governments of Laos and Thailand for their continued efforts and firm commitment to combating illegal drug trafficking and strengthening regional security,” she said.
Duterte added that these foreign anti-drug operations have directly benefited Filipinos at home.
“Their actions have helped save many Filipino families from the devastating effects of illegal drugs and have contributed to safer communities across the Philippines,” she added.
Addressing the country’s involvement in cross-border smuggling networks, the Vice President voiced dismay over the negative light cast on the nation.
“We recognize the concerns surrounding the Philippines’ role in regional drug trafficking and express my deep regret that our country has become associated with this problem,” Duterte stated.
Emphasizing the nation’s duties within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Duterte promised that the government would step up its law enforcement capabilities, enhance intelligence sharing across borders, and closely coordinate with regional allies.
“The Philippines is committed to learning from the experiences of our neighbors, fulfilling our obligations as an ASEAN member, and working toward a safer and more secure Southeast Asia for all,” she concluded.
