MANILA, Philippines — Lawmakers are calling for a formal congressional investigation into the recent seizure of a massive ₱3.54-billion illegal drug shipment intercepted in Laos, amid growing suspicions that high-ranking figures and prominent politicians may be shielding the international drug ring.
House Committee on Good Government and Public Accountability Chairman and Manila 3rd District Representative Joel Chua stated that the interception of 521 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine—locally known as shabu—aboard a private jet destined for the Philippines points to a highly sophisticated syndicate.
The high-stakes narcotics operation came to light after authorities intercepted the private aircraft at Luang Prabang International Airport in Laos, with intelligence reports indicating the cargo was bound for Manila.
Investigators revealed that the shipment had been falsely declared as vape products, while Malaysian authorities uncovered that a Filipino national had chartered the private jet for approximately $49,500 through a commercial aviation firm.
The international smuggling attempt has triggered multi-country coordination involving law enforcement agencies in the Philippines, Malaysia, and Laos. Locally, the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) are tracking down the network’s local fixers and associates.
Meanwhile, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has listed 11 persons of interest, emphasizing that designation does not automatically equate to criminal guilt.
Chua stressed that an official legislative inquiry is necessary to complement ongoing law enforcement efforts, secure documentary evidence, and allow implicated individuals to address the allegations directly in a public forum.
When pressed about circulating photographs linking prominent figures to the controversy, Chua hinted at potential high-level political involvement.
