THE HAGUE, Netherlands — The legal counsel representing former President Rodrigo Duterte has formally contested a prosecution request allowing the International Criminal Court (ICC) to admit previously recorded testimonies from two witnesses in his crimes against humanity trial.
Duterte’s defense team filed an objection arguing that the individuals in question should instead appear live before the court to undergo proper cross-examination. Furthermore, the lawyers raised concerns regarding the reliability of the statements, pointing to potential inconsistencies and claiming the testimonies relied heavily on hearsay.
While the defense acknowledged that utilizing recorded statements can help streamline proceedings given Duterte’s age and health, they emphasized that procedural speed should not compromise fair trial rights.
“Procedural efficiency must not come at the expense of his fundamental right to defend himself effectively,” the defense stated.
Duterte faces charges of crimes against humanity tied to the deadly anti-narcotics campaign implemented during his presidential administration. The court proceedings are slated to officially commence on November 30.
