ALEX EALA BOWS TO DIANA SHNAIDER IN TORAY PAN PACIFIC OPEN QUARTERFINALS

Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala put up a fierce fight before falling to third-seeded Diana Shnaider with a score of 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 during the quarterfinals of the 2026 Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, Japan.

Seeded eighth in the WTA 500 tournament, Eala came out strong by controlling the pace and securing two service breaks to comfortably take the opening set. However, momentum shifted as the match progressed into the second frame. Trailing 2-3, Eala requested a medical timeout after visibly losing steam.

Both competitors held their respective serves for the remainder of the set, forcing a tense tiebreaker where Shnaider edged ahead to equalize the match and push it into a decisive third set.

Capitalizing on her renewed momentum, the Russian player established a 3-1 lead by winning three consecutive games in the final set and maintained her advantage until the end.

A victory for the young Filipina would have propelled her into a semifinal showdown against Mia Pohankova, who advanced by defeating Alycia Parks 7-6 (3), 6-3.

This encounter marks Eala’s second consecutive loss to Shnaider, following her defeat in the Round of 16 at the Ningbo Open in China just a week prior.
