Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala has reached a historic milestone, climbing to a career-high No. 17 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings.
The 21-year-old athlete surpassed her previous personal best of No. 18 as she prepares for her opening match at the WTA 250 Hong Kong Open on Tuesday, November 3. Eala rose two spots from the previous week’s No. 20 ranking, building on her momentum despite a tough quarterfinal exit at the WTA 500 Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, Japan, where she fell to Diana Shnaider in a three-set battle, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 4-6.
With this achievement, Eala cemented her status as the highest-ranked Filipino and Southeast Asian tennis player in WTA history. She officially eclipses the historical benchmarks set by former regional standouts Yayuk Basuki of Indonesia and Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand, who both peaked at No. 19 in 1997 and 2002, respectively.
Looking ahead in Hong Kong, Eala is set to face familiar rival Alycia Parks of the United States in the opening round. The upcoming match marks their third career meeting, with the head-to-head record split following previous encounters at the Australian Open and the National Bank Open in Toronto.
Should Eala overcome Parks, she could face another rematch in the second round against Czech player Tereza Valentova, who previously defeated the Filipina at last year’s Japan Open and the Qatar Open last February.
The Hong Kong Open serves as Eala’s final professional tournament appearance of the year. Following the event, she will head home to the Philippines for a special exhibition match against Indonesia’s Janice Tjen scheduled for December 8 at the Philippine Arena.
