MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) is eyeing an earlier schedule for the filing of certificates of candidacy (COCs) for the 2028 national and local elections, proposing dates from September 20 to 26, 2027.
COMELEC Chairperson Atty. George Erwin Garcia announced the proposed timeline during an interview with the Bilyonaryo News Channel (BNC), explaining that the adjustment is designed to provide the poll body with a longer window to thoroughly vet individuals seeking elective offices.
“Talaga naghahabol kami sa panahon dahil ang filing ng candidacy natin para sa 2028 election ay amin pong ini-schedule sa September 20 to 26 next year,” Garcia stated.
The early filing period is intended to give election officials ample time to screen aspirants before the country heads to the polls, particularly given the magnitude of the upcoming presidential and vice-presidential races.
“Mas maaga pong filing upang masala natin ‘yung mga magfa-file ng candidacy dahil ito ay presidential, vice presidential, and such other national and local positions,” he added.
The proposed schedule will encompass candidates running for all positions in the May 2028 elections, which include the president, vice president, 12 senators, members of the House of Representatives, party-list representatives, and local government officials across provincial, city, and municipal levels.
