BUSINESS GROUPS URGE STRONGER ECONOMIC TIES WITH CHINA

MANILA, Philippines — A coalition of the country’s most influential business and civil society organizations has called on President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to pursue closer economic cooperation with China, warning that escalating diplomatic tensions could leave the Philippines behind its neighbors in the region.

In a joint statement issued on Saturday, November 7, the groups stressed that the government should prioritize expanding trade, investments, infrastructure, and tourism ties with Beijing to navigate global economic uncertainties.

They noted that fellow members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are already actively strengthening their respective economic engagements with China.

“The Philippines must likewise pursue mutually beneficial economic opportunities through constructive engagement, while firmly upholding its sovereignty and national interests,” the organizations said.

The broad alliance expressed strong backing for Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro, commending her pragmatic approach following her recent discussions with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

The groups praised the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) for favoring open communication channels over confrontation to safeguard key bilateral sectors, including exports, tourism, and overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

“We therefore support the DFA’s pursuit of principled diplomacy and sustained dialogue over confrontation, recognizing that a balanced and constructive relationship with China is essential to advancing Philippine economic security, national interests, and sustainable development,” the statement read.

The joint declaration was signed by prominent business and industry groups, including the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Inc. (FFCCCII), the Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP), and the Philippine Exporters Confederation Inc. (Philexport), alongside various labor and enterprise networks.
