Senator JV Ejercito raised concerns that an impeachment trial against Vice President Sara Duterte could have negative repercussions on the Philippine economy.
In an interview with DZBB, Ejercito said the trial, if it pushes through, may shake investor confidence and slow down foreign direct investments.
“Whether we like it or not, it will really affect us,” he said.
“My worry here is foreign direct investments, which we are longing for—these are what bring in businesses—invest in power plants, railway systems, and airports. All of these might have to take a backseat for a while,” he added.
Despite the economic concerns, Ejercito acknowledged that the Senate remains constitutionally mandated to conduct the impeachment trial.
He also addressed criticism that the Senate is allegedly blocking the proceedings and instead pointed to the House of Representatives for the delay.
“They had all the time. Why do it at the last minute?” Ejercito asked, referring to the Articles of Impeachment transmitted by the House last February.
Ejercito is among the senators who voted to return the Articles of Impeachment to the House last month, citing procedural concerns.
