Tensions appear to be deepening between Senator Imee Marcos and the family of her brother, President Bongbong Marcos, following a call from the senator for Malacañang Palace to issue a statement regarding the death of Rustan’s Commercial Corporation executive Paolo Tantoco.
In a statement released on Monday, July 14, Senator Marcos said the Palace must provide clarity over the circumstances surrounding Tantoco’s death—particularly in light of the fact that First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos had been with Tantoco a day before he was found unresponsive at Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.
“Given the gravity of these allegations and the matter’s undeniable public interest, I urge Malacañang to issue a comprehensive report on the circumstances of Mr. Tantoco’s death, including any involvement—direct or indirect—of the First Lady or other Philippine government officials,” said Senator Marcos.
She further called for the clarification of the First Lady’s whereabouts during the period of the incident: “I also call for the clarification of the First Lady’s whereabouts at the relevant time, as may be reflected in official records such as the Medical Examiner’s Report, to dispel further speculation.”
In response, Palace Press Officer Atty. Claire Castro dismissed the senator’s remarks during a press briefing held Tuesday, July 15, saying there is no need for Malacañang to respond.
“Let’s not get carried away by drama, gimmicks, and fabricated stories,” she added.Tantoco, 44, was found lifeless on March 8, a day after attending the Manila International Film Festival (MIFF) where he was seen accompanying the First Lady.
The LA County Coroner’s Office ruled the cause of death as an accidental cocaine overdose.
